About Us

We got into leather working around the time the COVID lock down occurred when my only pair of suspenders broke in a way that no one was able to fix. It left me with the only choice of purchasing a new pair; except, everything I found at the time didn’t possess the same quality it was replacing in terms of leather or the hardware. There had to be a better way. So, I bought some basic leather tools and leather and taught myself how to make these ideal suspenders. It took a few trials to cut the straps straight by hand, bevel the edges like a pro, and give the leather a good finish to last. And most importantly, to design and make them so they are easily repaired, when “life happens”.

From there, I progressed to other things I’ve been putting off getting: a new belt and a new hat band before others took notice and started asking me to make things for them. At that point, I thought it would be a good time to experiment with doing leather work more often and started Los Lobos Leather as a way to provide quality leather goods that are meant to last, like they did in times past.

Info / Learning

We wanted to provide some basic information when it comes to leather making; particularly the sections of hide and what projects they are best for.

Parts of the hide
Shoulder(s)
The shoulders have a combination of firmness and tensile strength and tanners make great attempts to set out the hides to smooth out any wrinkles from the neck along with any blemishes from barb wire scratches or naturally occurring fat wrinkles. The shoulders are the areas of the hide that bags, purses, and other accessories are made.

Bend or Butt
The bend or the butt is typically a couple of ounces thicker than the rest of the hide and is the most firm of the hide. There’s minimal stretch to these thicker fibers which makes them great for belts and straps.

Belly
The belly is the softest part of hide and is typically regarded as the “waste” section of the hide but this is far from the truth. The belly is used in places on garments and accessories that need to provide comfort to the user and by them being sewn on other pieces from the shoulders or bends, they end of providing the same level of strength.

Measuring for a belt
The distance between the chape and the third hole in the billet is your waist measurement.
The size of the buckle also has to be taken into consideration.
Example:
A 34” waist with a 2” buckle width lands on the 5th hole of a 34” belt or the 3rd hole on a 32” belt.

Typical Belt Widths/Weights
Adult
1.5” Casual 8-10 oz
1.25” Dress 6-8 oz
